Since this field encompasses a huge number of highly varied careers, the specific experience depends on the specific field one is interested in. Education should include at least a high school diploma to begin with and then for many jobs/careers, it would be possible to complete a Certificate or a 2 year AS or AAS degree through a Community/Technical college, concentrating on programs such as Agronomy, Heavy Equipment operation, Diesel Mechanics, Small Motors, Precision Ag, Animal Science and specialties, Computer Programming and Irrigation Technologies. General education courses in high school and college should include biology, chemistry, and ecology courses and technical courses including animal sciences, soil sciences, horticulture, agronomy, diesel mechanics, precision Ag. and others. Internships or hands on experience on the farm or working for a COOP or farm equipment company would be useful.
If you are interested in a true professional career assisting Farmers, there are many Ag. schools that offer 4 year degrees on to Master’s and PhD’s in the same fields that were listed for 2 year or certificate programs. NSDU, SDSU, U of MN and U of Wisc are some of the excellent local colleges with Ag. programs.
