A two-year technical degree is preferred, but not always necessary. People who like to hunt and fish tend to do really well with survey work. The terrain we are in can be hilly, rocky, heavy woods or swamp. Computer skills are a plus, we do a lot of work with AutoCAD in the office and with technical handheld data collectors in the field. A willingness to travel can be very attractive to employers who have projects spread around a region. Counties and MnDOT have good local surveying positions for people who don’t want to go too far from home.
