Depends. Probably preferred is having a technical certificate from a Machine Tool Technology program. But there are employers who have training programs for this too, if you can’t afford to go to school after high school, or if you learn better in a working environment instead of a school environment. Having a mechanical aptitude and the desire to learn, and the ability to pay attention to details is very important.
