Obtain college degree, obtain employment or pursue volunteer opportunities working with programs that serve at-risk families.

If you are still in high school, talk to your HS counselor about high school courses in human development, psychology, interpersonal communication and child development that you can take. Look into college programs in social work and visit with the college faculty and students. Take a tour of a local mental health agencies and interview someone currently working as a social worker.
