Depends on where you are in your career and what type of Civil Engineering firm you are working for. With a private firm, your first few years of employment would likely require a considerable amount of time in the field, learning how things about construction and contractors. The farther you progress into the career, the more time you would spend in the office working on reports, designs, management, etc.

My day consists of mostly design work and calculations. The computer program I use for doing my designs is Autodesk Civil 3D. The design work I typically do is road design, site design, site grading, stormwater pond design and grading. We use this program to do all of the plan sheets for construction. The other calculations I work on are in excel spread sheets. I have set up the sheets so I can input the existing and proposed site conditions and it calculates the storm water pond volumes I will need.
